Dress to Impress: Wardrobe Styling Tips for Stunning Headshots

These days personal branding and professional image matter more than ever, headshots have become an essential tool for making a lasting impression. Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, creating a portfolio, or simply want to look your best in your online presence, your wardrobe plays a crucial role in achieving a stunning headshot. With a few strategic styling tips, you can be sure your headshot stands out and represents you in the best possible light.

1. Understand Your Audience
Before you dive into your closet, consider your target audience. Are you taking a headshot for a corporate job, a creative position, or a personal project? Your clothing should be in line with the industry or field you're associated with. For example, a finance professional might opt for a more conservative look, while a graphic designer could choose something trendier and more expressive.

2. Choose Solid Colors
Solid colors are your best friend when it comes to headshots. They draw attention to your face and help you stand out. Neutral tones like black, white, gray, and navy are timeless choices, while jewel tones like deep red, emerald green, or sapphire blue can add a touch of personality without being distracting.

3. Avoid Busy Patterns
Patterns can be visually distracting in a headshot. Avoid clothing with intricate patterns, bold stripes, or large logos that can divert attention away from your face. Simple and classic attire is the way to go.

4. Dress for the Season
Dress appropriately for the season in which your headshot is being taken. This not only keeps you comfortable but also ensures your headshot is relevant throughout the year. A light, breathable outfit in summer and a warmer, layered ensemble in winter will keep you looking and feeling your best.

5. Pay Attention to Necklines
The neckline of your top can make a significant difference in your headshot. V-neck or scoop-neck tops are generally flattering because they create the illusion of a longer neck and draw attention to your face. Avoid turtlenecks or high-neck tops that can make your neck appear shorter.

6. Keep Accessories Simple
Accessories should be minimal and understated. Small earrings, a simple necklace, or a classic watch can add a touch of elegance to your look. However, avoid overly flashy or distracting accessories that can take the focus away from your face.

7. Grooming Matters
Your wardrobe is just one part of the equation. Proper grooming is equally important. Ensure your hair looks good, and if you wear makeup, keep it natural and matte to reduce shine. A fresh manicure can also make a big difference if your hands will be visible in the shot.

8. Test Your Outfit
Before the actual photoshoot, try on your outfit and see how it looks under different lighting conditions. This will help you notice any potential issues and make necessary adjustments.

9. Bring Options
It's always a good idea to bring a few outfit options to the photoshoot. This gives you and the photographer some flexibility to choose what works best in the actual setting and lighting conditions.

10. Confidence is Key
No matter what you wear, confidence is the most important accessory. If you feel good in your outfit, it will translate into your headshot. Relax, smile, and let your true self shine through.

Dressing for a headshot is about choosing attire that complements your personality and the message you want to convey. It's a combination of your style, message, and your understanding of the industry or audience you're targeting. With these wardrobe styling tips, you'll be well on your way to capturing a headshot that truly impresses and represents the best version of yourself

Headshots for a new business

Joanne needed some updated images for her business, that could be used on her website. Like most women, it had been a few years since she last did professional photos.

She booked in an executive women’s session, so that she could get a range of different images.

When she arrived in the studio, our hair and makeup artist discussed with her the look that she preferred. Helen, our hair and makeup artist is amazing at getting the look just right for our clients. She understands that no all women wear makeup everyday, and is able to create a perfect natural look.

Joanne had brought a great range of clothes with her, so we could create some really great variety in the images. From my formal to more casual look. I recommend taking the time to get a range of different photos during the session. It means that the next time you need a professional photo for a presentation or talk that you are doing, you will have a number of options you can use.

Featured work, iinet case studies

The postman just dropped this brochure off at our studio. As I started flicking through it I suddenly came across some of my images.

I had completely forgotten the projects I had done for iinet last year. These projects included documenting about 4 different small businesses and how they use iinet in their business.
Here are a couple of quick iphone photos from the iinet brochure.

Stephanie Brennan - magazine cover and feature photos

Stephanie Brennan is only 24 but she has had her fair share of media attention. Now she has been invited to be featured as a world class entrepreneur on the cover of World Class Magazine. ‪#‎worldclass‬ ‪#‎entrepreneur‬
Given such a great opportunity for exposure it was really important to get a set of professional photos together.  The key was to get a variety looks to reflect her personality but also to create variety for the magazine and still allow the magazine to select a hero shot for the cover with enough room for copy etc.

Stephanie took advantage of our "Executive Woman Package" which included professional hair and makeup and the 5 retouched images.

And below you can see the original images again as I supplied them to the client before they were cropped and edited for the magazine.

A quick behind the scenes of how we set up and lit the images on the dark background. Handpainted backdrop with a graduated center, striplight on the left as the main light and a larger softbox on the right bouncing in a large white wall just to create a soft fill on the right.  Not the traditional setup but it created exactly the look I was after.
